Personal Trainer VS. Coach

A personal trainer and a coach are not the same thing. In this post I will explain the key differences for you to make the best decision when hiring someone to help you with your weight loss goals.

Personal Trainer

A personal trainer is somebody that counts reps. The client did this many reps, they count, they show up and go home. No more additional support on your journey. When I use to work at a big corporate gym this is what you normally would see, a 30 minute session which is really only 25 minutes, the personal trainer is counting reps that the client is doing but is really looking at the girl walking by or worse, on their cell phone. If you’ve gone to one of these big gyms before you know exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t seen this, the next time you are a gym pay close attention to the trainers.

A coach goes further because they have some sort of emotional intelligence. It’s almost like a 6th sense.  You have to be smart enough (emotionally) to understand who you’re working with and meet them where they are at. Maybe they’re having an off day. As a coach you have to be able to push them and make them leave in  a better mood than when they first got to your training session.  Transitioning from a personal trainer to a coach is difficult but can also be one of the most rewarding things when you see your members winning in all aspects of their lives.

You gotta’ have the right attitude to be able to help somebody. This is probably the number one reason why I have been able to open up 7 Camp Xcel locations in a matter of 6 years. Here is an example: Let’s just say a member is having a bad day and the coach is having a bad day, this is not the case of two negatives will equal a positive. This is where the true professional has to come and change their attitude to give their client the best possible experience.

As a coach and a program we have to help our clients achieve amazing results. A coach will go out of his way to ensure that happens to his/her members. It’s not only a 45 minute sessions and the member is done. It’s helping them with nutrition, emotional break throughs and helping them beat the person they saw in the mirror yesterday.
